But high school opened up exciting new avenues of expression. She became an athlete, a singer, and a guitarist. Later, she spent many enjoyable years working and travelling in Asia, Europe, North America, and the Caribbean, as a diplomat and economist. During this period, she wrote extensively for government and business publications, hiding the storyteller beneath the folds of facts and figures.
Eventually, life came full circle. Volunteer work with young people began to stir the fires of fiction in her again. When she finally stepped back into the world between dreams and visions, Alex Springfeather was there, waiting.
Legend of the Swan children, her first novel, is his story.
Maureen Marks-Mendonca now lives in Ontario, Canada with her husband, though she visits the Caribbean frequently. Alejandro Vega Van Sertima was born in Alma, a sleepy South American village on the Caribbean Sea. Known among the Waspachu as Alex Springfeather, he lives a simple but happy life on Senora Lagrima's hacienda. His favourite pastimes are canoeing down the rivers, eating frio-frio on hot days, and practicing his growing powers on his startled mother, Tia Lucia.
Suddenly Senora Lagrima dies under very suspicious circumstances, and Tia Lucia vanishes without a trace. Before he knows it, Alex and his silver panman are caught up in a hair-raising adventure. Can he find Tia Lucia before his pursuers find him? Will he live to see the Legend come to pass? Read Legend of the Swan Children to find out!
